Former University of Maine shortstop With a thumb injury, Jeremy Pena has been placed on the disabled list with the Houston Astros.
Jeremy Pena, a former University of Maine shortstop and current Houston Astros shortstop, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday after injuring his thumb diving for a ball during Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers.
According to the Houston Chronicle, an MRI revealed no severe injury, but he won’t be able to swing a bat for at least a week.
Pena, who is 24 years old, is currently on a tear.
The Astros hit.277 with nine home runs and 27 runs batted in.
He took over for All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa, who joined the Minnesota Twins as a free agency this summer.
Pena is presently third on the club in hits, batting average, and home runs, RBIs, and runs scored with 53. (27).
With six stolen bases, he is tied for second on the club, and he has yet to be caught.
Pena has 54 games under his belt and has 13 multi-hit outings, including four three-hit games.
His on-base percentage is.333, his slugging percentage is.471, and his OPS is.805 (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage).
With 48 strikeouts, the Astros’ third-round draught selection in 2018 is tied for the club lead.
He has eight doubles and a triple, with a.953 fielding percentage after making 10 mistakes in 213 chances.
During his three-year career at UMaine, the Providence native and former All-America East second team shortstop hit.305 with 12 home runs, 32 doubles, 10 triples, and 75 RBIs.
Last month, Pena hit a home run in his first at-bat at Fenway Park in Boston.
He is the son of Geronimo Pena, a former Major League second baseman.
