Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to a trio for black hole discovery

Protoday247 News Monitoring Desk: The trio of Roger Penrose of Britain, Reinhard Genzel of Germany and Andrea Ghez of the US were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their black hole discovery, the Nobel jury said.

The jury said that half of the award went to Penrose for demonstrating “that the general theory of relativity led to the existence of black holes,” and the other half went to Genzel and Ghez for discovering “that the orbits of stars at the center of our galaxy are governed by an intangible and incredibly heavy item.”

The prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is worth 10 m Swedish kronor (£870,000), which will be divided by the winners, with half going to Penrose and the other half split between Genzel and Ghez, according to information from The Guardian news article.
