Sheinelle Jones, co-host of NBC’s Today show, has been absent from the program since December 2024 due to a serious family health matter. On May 23, 2025, it was publicly revealed that her husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away at the age of 45 after a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The couple, who met at Northwestern University and married in 2007, have three children: Kayin (15), and 12-year-old twins Clara and Uche.
In response to her husband’s passing, Jones expressed gratitude for the support she has received, particularly from her Today colleagues, who have praised her strength, faith, and humor during this challenging time. Savannah Guthrie described both Sheinelle and Uche as “warriors,” while Dylan Dreyer noted Sheinelle’s unwavering positivity. Craig Melvin, a close friend of Uche’s, highlighted Jones’ continued thoughtfulness towards others, even amid her grief.
Prior to this revelation, Jones had taken a leave of absence from the show in January 2025 to address a family health matter, which was not specified at the time. She later shared on social media that she was “taking time to deal with a family health matter” and expressed appreciation for the support from her Today family and viewers.
In addition to her television work, Jones has authored a book titled Through Mom’s Eyes: Simple Wisdom From Mothers Who Raised Extraordinary Humans, which was released on April 15, 2025. The book features life lessons from mothers of various celebrities and includes personal anecdotes from Jones herself.
As of now, it remains unclear when Jones will return to the Today show. Her colleagues have expressed their support and eagerness for her return when she feels ready.
