War between Russia and Ukraine
War between Russia and Ukraine | A letter to President Joe Biden encouraging talks with Russia to resolve the crisis in Ukraine was withdrawn on Tuesday by the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a group of liberal Democrats, according to The Washington Post.
The letter, which sparked outrage among fellow Democrats and in Ukraine, was drafted by staff and distributed on Monday without sufficient screening, according to Rep. Progressive Caucus leader Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.)
After the verdict on Tuesday, Griner’s attorneys, Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov, released a statement saying, “We are profoundly disappointed.” “We continue to believe that the sentence is harsh and goes against the established judicial practice.
” Griner spoke to the jury via an interpreter. I want to apologize for this error, she said. I understand the accusations made against me, but I did not plan to do this,” she said, adding that she hoped her guilty plea would be taken into account.
War between Russia and Ukraine | On Tuesday, the U.N. Security Council debated the unsubstantiated Russian claim that Ukraine intended to deploy a “dirty bomb,” an explosive device intended to disperse radioactive substances.
In a letter to the council that The Post has access to, Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya pleaded with Western countries to “use their influence” on Kyiv in order to avert what he called a potential “act of nuclear terrorism.” An inquiry for comment made on Tuesday did not receive a prompt response from the United Nations.
In response to a request from Kiev, the U.N. nuclear inspector is getting ready to travel to two nuclear-related locations. Without providing any supporting information, Russian state media claimed—citing an official—that Ukraine was utilizing the facilities in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk to make a “dirty bomb.”
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi stated that after inspecting one of the places a month prior, “no undeclared nuclear activity or material were identified there.”
Updates on the battlefield
On Tuesday, Ukrainian forces pushed back Russian mercenaries from Bakhmut in eastern Donetsk and continued their advance against the Russian military there. They also gained momentum in Luhansk when they took control of a crucial road connecting the towns of Kreminna and Svatove, according to The Post.
According to the British Defense Ministry, Russia has lost more than a fifth of its fleet of assault helicopters to the conflict. Since February, at least 23 of the Ka-52 HOKUM attack helicopters used by the Russian Air Force have been identified as having disappeared in Ukraine.
According to the ministry’s intelligence report, Ka-52s are “one of the few alternatives available” to Russian commanders “to offer close support for soldiers in action,” but they come with a significant risk of “attrition against Ukrainian man-portable air defense systems.” The ministry concluded that “Russia is still unable to sustain appropriate air superiority” in Ukraine.
