NEWCASTLE defeated United 0–0 in the game
Newcastle United’s disciplined defence kept Erik ten Hag’s Reds to a scoreless draw for the full 90 minutes, infuriating Manchester United.
Despite having 62 percent of the possession, the home team only managed two attempts on goal the entire time. However, Jadon Sancho will feel unjustly denied a penalty after being brought down by Sean Longstaff inside the area in the second half.
Joelinton had two consecutive attempts against the woodwork in the first half, but the Reds were more of a danger in the second, and substitute Marcus Rashford had a golden chance to win the game with a header from the last assault that was just missed.
FIRST HALF: GOOD LUCK TO US
Despite a promising start that saw Fred shoot off-target, the game was allowed to disintegrate into a scrappy, stop-start contest with little to no momentum. Newcastle was unfortunate not to score in the 24th minute as they had the better start of the half.
When the visitors were given a free kick in a dangerous position, Callum Wilson had previously made an unsuccessful claim that Raphael Varane had fouled him as he moved toward goal.
When Kieran Trippier’s strike struck the wall, the Newcastle captain volleyed in Joelinton, whose header bounced against the crossbar. Joelinton was then only able to nudge against the right post of the goalkeeper as De Gea was left unoccupied, and Diogo Dalot gladly punched the ball behind for a corner.
De Gea, who was playing for the Reds for the 500th time, had swiped away a Dan Burn attempt, and Wilson curled a corner just beyond Bruno Guimaraes’ grasp. United also had opportunities, but Sancho missed both of them. After making a good run, he also set up Antony, but Nick Pope stopped the Brazilian’s shot from a close angle.
After multiple stops for Newcastle players to take medical attention, the first period came to an end, and manager Eddie Howe’s game plan was working because his squad had not been particularly tested defensively.
AFTER BREAK: NO WAY THROUGH
Immediately after the restart, De Gea’s ball out placed Fred under serious pressure, so it was a relief when Wilson missed the target with his attempt from a decent position.
Although Cristiano Ronaldo actually put the ball in the goal, the assistant referee’s flag was raised and TV replays proved that he was offside. When the no. 7 thought a free-kick had been taken, he stole the ball as Nick Pope was lining it up and scored again. However, all he earned for his trouble was a yellow card.
Sancho seemed to have been tripped by Longstaff in the box in the 58th minute, but the VAR review supported referee Pawson’s decision to not give a penalty. Soon after, Casemiro again fell in the area, but United failed to break down the Magpies and the appeals were denied.
After being set up from a corner, Miguel Almiron could only shoot into the Stretford End. Up until Ronaldo’s replacement, Marcus Rashford, seemed almost onside as he sprinted past advancing Pope and elected to square the ball, there had been very little goalmouth action. Fred, unfortunately, was unable to score despite being at full stretch.
In the fifth and final minute of injury time, Rashford had the best opportunity to win it, but he headed Casemiro’s precise centre well wide of the far post.
