In New Scooby-Doo film, Velma is seen have feelings for a woman

Fans have speculated about that Velma Dinkley attraction to women for years, but recent trailers for Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo seem to corroborate it.

The film’s director, Audie Harrison, emailed NPR to say, “It honestly did not occur to [me] that we were producing anything so innovative until just now.” I just set out to have fun with the humour of an uncomfortable teenage crush while writing and filming this.

He said, “I genuinely thought Velma’s character had more to lose by falling in love with the villain of the story. She is a girl, and that is just… a fact. Having said that, it is wonderful to be a part of establishing representation, particularly with a well-known property like Scooby-Doo!”

The leader of a costume criminal gang dubbed Coco Diablo is a new character in the animated film, which was made available for purchase on digital platforms on Tuesday. The Mystery Inc. member who is Velma’s obsession causes her to swoon many times, causing her cheeks to flush and her glasses to fog up.

Daphne makes a joke about imprisoned criminals being Velma’s type in one episode. The detective with the glasses attempts to deny it before screaming, “Who am I kidding, really? Daphne, I’m crushing like crazy! What will I do? Do I say anything?”

For at least 20 years, those working behind the scenes of the Scooby-Doo series have attempted to show Velma’s sexual orientation. In 2020, James Gunn, the author of the live-action Scooby-Doo films from 2002 and 2004, tweeted that Velma was “explicitly lesbian” in the script from 2001. According to Gunn, Warner Bros. subsequently removed these specifics from the first film and even gave Velma a boyfriend in the follow-up.

Harrison gave a new situation with Warner Bros. this time. They didn’t worry too much about how it would be seen, which, in my opinion, shows that they supported Velma’s character’s decision to pursue this road from the start.

The character Velma from “Mystery, Inc.” is not bisexual, as I have previously said. She is lesbian “The supervising producer of the 2010–2013 animated series, Tony Cervone, posted on Instagram in 2020. “It appears as plain as we could have made it ten years ago if you follow the full Marcie arc. Marcie and Velma may not have had enough time in the normal timeline to act on their affections, but after the reset, they are a relationship. You may not agree with it, but that was our goal.”

Warner Bros., Myrna Velasco, who plays Coco Diablo, and representatives for Kate Micucci, who plays Velma, did not immediately respond to NPR’s request for comment.
