Chris Pratt has declared that he is not religious and that he has never attended the Hillsong Church.
In a recent cover story for Men’s Health, the Jurassic World actor discussed claims that he is connected to the religion, whose prominent members have expressed anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs.
“I have never attended Hillsong. Actually, I’ve never gone to Hillsong. No one from that church that I know, “Pratt, 43, according to the publication.
Chris Pratt received criticism after discussing religion during a 2019 visit on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after being called out by actor Elliot Page.
At the time, he sent a message informing followers: “Recently, it has been claimed that I attend a church that is “infamously anti-LGBTQ” and “hates a specific set of individuals.” Nothing is more false than it is. I am a man who thinks that everyone has the right to love who they choose without having to worry about other people’s opinions.”
To clarify why he refrained from criticising Hillsong amid the reaction, he said: “I’m going to, like, put a church under the bus?” before adding: “If it’s like the Westboro Baptist Church, that’s different.” Now, however, he has verified that the church he attends is Zoe Church.
Hillsong Church is known for holding services in enormous, arena-like settings and identifying itself as a “modern Christian church.”
Christians have long argued about whether the church is a Christian organisation that loves God or a cult-like craze. For worship, the church favours contemporary music.
In the conversation, Pratt discussed his broader perspectives on organised religion and called it “oppressive.”
“For a very long time, religion has been repressive as f***. I had no idea that while not being religious, I would essentially become the face of religion “Despite claiming to attend Zoe Church, Pratt remarked.
“I think there’s a difference between being religious and following man-made traditions, which frequently appropriate the respect due to what I believe to be a very real God, and using it to dominate people, take their money, mistreat their children, steal their property, or excuse hatred,” he continued.
Regardless of what it is, the actor continued. “The evil that is in every man’s heart has clung to the back of religion and ridden along for the ride,” the author said.
