6.4-Magnitude Earthquake in Pakistan & India
A very striking earthquake on Friday night hit millions of people in the northern parts of India and Pakistan (Feb 12, 2021). The earthquake epicenter was actually in neighboring Tajikistan. Still, this comparatively deep earthquake caused it to be felt as far as New Delhi in India. About 1100 km away, and much farther than Bhopal in Central India, at an intermediate 86 km below the surface, 1600 kilometers away.
With many comments coming into Volcano Discovery explaining the trembling and fear of people running outside. Both the Indian and Pakistani sides of Kashmir were broadly shook. People from Indian cities have all registered convulsions, such as Amritsar, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Gujrat, Gurdaspur, Jaipur, Jammu, and Noida Sopore, and Srinagar.
“The ground rocked side to side then up and down. I ran downstairs with my heart pumping. I took my mother and grandma outside. Very scary. May God have mercy?”The ground shook side by side, then up and down. I ran downstairs with my heart pumping. Then, I took out my mother and grandma.
Very terrifying. May God have mercy?
With news from Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi, Pakistan was also much shaken. The bed shook violently for at least 10 seconds, a source from Lahore wrote. At first, I just freaked out and could not work out the cause for the trembling, but after my mother rushed out of her room, I became convinced that it was an earthquake.
A family from Faisalabad also sent in their photo, waiting outside for potential aftershocks in the open. Things were dropping from shelves, beds trembling for up to 15 seconds, lamps and fans swaying, creaking doors, upset animals, birds jumping from trees or chirping, noises like thunder, and even people yelling “earthquake” have been recorded in many areas.
While we did not receive information from China, Xinjiang’s location, China’s Uyghur autonomous zone. Comparatively close to the epicenter indicates that it was almost definitely felt there too. Seismological services recorded no immediate aftershocks within a few hours after the earthquake.
A Reuters Report
According to Inter-Services Public Relations, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is in touch with all PDMAs and receiving notifications across Pakistan. There are no reports of any damage so far. NDMA is taking stock of the earthquake situation and will keep people updated, it said.
In New Delhi and Srinagar, a Reuters report said that heavy tremors were also felt. The US Geological Survey set the magnitude of the quake at 5.9, based 35 km west of Tajikistan (Murghob in). It said cracks were reported in some India-held Kashmir houses. And a witness also reported a collapse of the wall near Amritsar, but no casualty reports were revealed.
