Trump supports Oracle Corp’s reported offer for TikTok
President Donald Trump has offered his blessing to Oracle Corp’s confirmed offer for TikTok, a Chinese video streaming site that may also be acquired by Microsoft. Leaks claimed Oracle — whose founder Larry Ellison earned millions in Trump’s campaign funds — was considering an offer for TikTok ‘s activities in the US, Canada, Australia , and New Zealand.
Trump’s administration gave TikTok’s parent company ByteDance a 90-day deadline to discard the app before it was banned in the United States, citing national security concerns. Taking questions during a speech in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday, Trump said, “I think Oracle is a wonderful business, and I think its ceo is a fantastic man. He’s a nice fellow. “I think Oracle would certainly have been someone who could handle it.” The President added that the potential bidder should have to “make sure the United States is well paid.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, Ellison organized a Trump fundraiser in his California home in February, collecting $7 million. Trump’s action against TikTok came after he claimed that China could use it to track the locations of federal employees, build files on people for extortion, and run corporate espionage.
In an online statement this week, the firm said, “TikTok has never given any U.S. customer data to the Chinese government, nor will it do so if asked.” On Monday, China blasted Washington for utilizing “internet gunboat diplomacy” in the TikTok situation.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said that TikTok had achieved all the US wanted, including recruiting Americans as its top managers, running its servers in the US, and releasing its source code.
