Punjab declares three-year prison sentences for hoarders
Gazette Notification of the Punjab Prevention of Hoarding Ordinance, Punjab Government released, 2020. Under this regulation, the hoarders may be sentenced for up to three years’ imprisonment and 50% of the recovered content would be deposited in the national exchequer while the officer concerned may also search any dealer’s go down without a warrant.
Similarly, dealers will be required to deposit their production, import and export records, staff size, sales and distribution with the appropriate officers. Chief Minister Usman Buzdar claimed in this regard that the ordinance was released for taking stern action against those who establish artificial crisis by hoarding.
Action against those hoarding 41 critical products will be taken and 10 per cent of the deposited sum will be granted to whistleblower. The hoarding offense would meanwhile be non-bailable. He said the hoarders were the public enemy, and indiscriminate crackdown would be launched against them because the government was dearest to the public interest and any artificial price hike would never be allowed.
