MAY 1ST – THE LABOUR DAY
Labour day is basically a global holiday celebrated annually on 1st May. This year (2019) it is going to be celebrated Wednesday. The purpose of this day is to commemorate the hard times of the labors union and workers & to appreciate their struggles for workers’ rights & against unsecured long working hours.
The origin of May Day was put by the United States in the 19th century in Chicago but the official recognition was made in 1889 during the first International Socialist Congress held in Paris to commemorate Haymarket Affairs.
The Haymarket Affairs was the name given to a campaign organized by the Labour Union to fight for an eight –hour workday because previously the workers were compelled to work for 16 hours in totally unsafe & insecure circumstances.
The Labour Union along with the Federation of Organized trade called out a general strike on 1st May 1886. And luckily the ground 30,000 to 40,000 workers participated in rallies and the strike in Chicago.
The protest of the Labours was a peaceful message until the Chicago police entered the 2 minutes.
Many countries including Pakistan keep all the business and educational departments closed to make a public holiday on May 1st to tribute the labors of the Haymarket Affairs.
